“The king of wines and the wine of kings.” – this expression refers to Tokaj wine, which is the pride of Hungarian winemaking. The saying comes from the fame of Tokaj Aszú, which was also recognized by King Louis XIV of France, who said: “Vinum regum, rex vinorum” (wine of kings, king of wines). Although the age of kings is gone, Tokaj Aszú has lost none of its majesty.
Tokaj Aszú, or aszú for short, is an aszú wine produced in the Tokaj wine region, i.e. a dessert wine made from aszú grapes, a wine specialty. It is the most famous of the Tokaj wines. It is made using a century-old technology, which is based on the late harvest of aszú grapes and the subsequent special winemaking process. Even more special than aszú is Tokaj essence (also known as Nectar or natural essence), which is a very dense juice that flows out and is captured under the weight of aszú grapes during storage. Aszús are distinguished by the number of puttons (3, 4, 5, 6), the higher-quality aszú has a higher sugar content. Aszú has no expiration date, it only improves over the years, becoming darker and darker in color and changing in taste, becoming sweeter and sweeter.
